Science Ambassadors visit Ushaw College
Our new Year 5 Science Ambassadors recently spent a day at Ushaw College in Durham learning about different forms of scientific investigations. Our team of Freyja, Ava, Isabelle, Zena, Grace and Kimberley had an exciting day meeting pupils from other schools within the Chilton and Ferryhill cluster group including Cleves Cross, Ferryhill Station and Dene Bank schools. They worked as part of a team, learned to present in front of their peers and discovered some cool, new science investigations that they can take back to school and teach their friends in Year 5 about.
Of the day, Freyja said “This was a brilliant day, lots of learning and lots of fun.” Grace said “I was nervous at first but I soon forgot that and really enjoyed myself.” Ava said “It was great meeting people from different schools.” Kimberley said “We tested to see what makes oranges float and what makes them sink.” Isabelle stated “We tried things that we did not expect to work…and they did!”
Hopefully there will be more Ambassador trips and news to report later in the school year.
Chilton Academy have been celebrating Science.
A new Phiz Lab designed to nurture pupil-led scientific investigation across six primary schools has officially opened this month. The facility, based at Chilton Academy, Chilton, County Durham, is the first Ogden Trust Phiz Lab in North East England. It will be enjoyed by the Durham Ferryhill & Chilton Primary Partnership and is supported by Durham University and Approach Too CIC. Staff and students from Durham University will help teachers and pupils with hands-on experiments in the Lab and longer-term scientific investigations.
You can find out more by visiting the Ogden Trust website.
Autumn Term Events
Mr Roberts discussed the work of the Science Ambassadors in assembly, using last year’s Ambassadors to talk about their involvement in the project. Each class in Years 3, 4 and 5 discussed the idea and then nominated and chose their own Ambassadors and Apprentices.
Visiting Durham University
The Ambassadors visited Durham University and met the Ambassadors from the other schools in the Ferryhill and Chilton cluster group. They met and listened to Dr Lorraine Coghill and Dr Jenny Search from the University of Durham and then took part in a range of Scientific investigations in small teams.
Ambassadors presenting their work in Assembly
The Ambassadors presented the results of their day at Durham University to the rest of the school in an assembly that they prepared and delivered independently.
